ICC exam cost, PRONTO remote proctoring and retakes

✓ Checked 17 Oct 2026 against ICC's B1 store listing, PRONTO guidance and candidate support pages.

✓ The ICC Residential Building Inspector exam, B1, has a $320 list price per attempt on the ICC store. That is the exam charge, not a complete preparation budget. Keep your reference book, study materials and any test-center premium separate when working out what you will spend.

This guide covers the national B1 certification exam. Other ICC exams can have different prices and booking rules. Start with the Rafter Tie overview and B1 outline guide if you are still deciding which exam fits your work.

What the exam fee covers

The B1 store listing reports 60 questions and 2 hours. It also says exam purchases are final and valid for 365 days. Before purchasing, check the title, code year, testing method and candidate name. These are separate selections; a correct exam title does not establish that you selected the edition you intended.

ICC's exam catalog says members receive discounted exam pricing. Check the amount shown for your own account rather than assuming the public list price is your final charge. This guide does not quote a member rate that was unavailable in the public listing.

ICC's booking instructions require a separate premium for in-person testing. The instructions say that fee cannot be waived, but do not publish its amount in the article text.

Test-center premium: ICC's public booking instructions don't state the current extra charge for in-person delivery, so check it on ICC's scheduling page before you compare totals.

Remote PRONTO or a test center?

PRONTO offers live remote proctoring around the clock, while in-person appointments depend on test-center availability. Remote testing still requires a suitable room and equipment. ICC lists the Guardian Secure Browser, a functioning webcam and microphone, and a stable desk or table. Run its linked equipment check on the computer and connection you intend to use.

Choose the setting you can control. At home, plan for interruptions, shared internet and whether you can install the required browser. At a center, allow for travel and check the appointment's local time. Neither option removes the need to prepare your permitted references.

How booking works

ICC requires purchase before scheduling. Its booking walkthrough starts in myICC under My Exams. Open the purchased exam, review More Info, and follow Take Exam to select remote or in-person proctoring.

For remote delivery, check the time zone carefully. The walkthrough describes short-term booking slots and warns that failing to launch before the displayed expiry forfeits the attempt and fee. Treat the countdown and appointment details as instructions to follow, not a flexible arrival window.

For in-person delivery, select a location and available appointment, then review the premium and confirmation instructions. Keep the confirmation with your preparation checklist so the location, delivery method and start time are easy to check again.

ICC's exam-day guidance says remote candidates need a phone available during check-in. It also lists prohibited personal items and electronic devices. Read those rules before setting up your desk; ordinary study habits may not match the testing-room rules.

Retakes cost another exam fee

✓ ICC's retake policy allows six certification-exam attempts within a six-month period, with the exam fee payable each time. After the sixth attempt, the next registration must wait until six months from the first attempt. The same article treats contractor exams separately, so do not apply contractor waiting rules to B1 without checking the applicable exam information.

If you need another attempt, use the result report to choose what to review before paying again. ICC's after-exam guidance explains that a failing report shows relative performance by content area. Compare that report with the outline, then practice locating the relevant material in your own reference book.

Before booking, confirm your IRC edition. Use the free B1 diagnostic to organize study priorities. Its results do not replace ICC's exam report or eligibility guidance.
