B1 prep for building departments and inspection agencies

See where each person stands against International Code Council's published outline before you pay for training or book an exam seat.

What your team can use today

  • A free check per exam, scored by domain
  • A study plan built around each person's exam date
  • A one-page reimbursement request your staff can send to a manager

Questions are original, written to the published content outline, and every answer key is re-checked by a separate blind solve.

1. BaselineEach person takes the free check for the exam they are sitting next.
2. FocusTheir results name the weakest domain, so study time goes where it is needed.
3. ReimburseIf you fund prep, staff can generate a request letter with the cost and reasons.

This page is for supervisors and training managers who buy exam preparation for building inspectors. Rafter Tie prepares one person at a time for the ICC B1 Residential Building Inspector exam. A team order is the same course bought for several people, quoted and invoiced by hand.

Plan around an open-book exam

The B1 is an open-book exam on the International Residential Code (IRC): 60 questions in 2 hours, so about 2 minutes a question. Speed in finding the right section matters as much as knowing the code. ICC lists the B1 on the 2021 and 2024 IRC editions, so confirm which edition each person will book and make sure they own a copy. Rafter Tie does not provide code text and cites sections by number only. See the 2021 vs 2024 IRC guide and the tab list for the B1 before the exam date is set.

Many jurisdictions name the B1 in their requirements, and the rules differ. Check your own authority having jurisdiction. The certification by state guide is a starting point.

What each seat gets

A seat is one person's access to the course. It includes:

  • A question bank with each answer key checked by an independent second solve
  • Timed practice exams
  • A lesson for each area of the published ICC B1 content outline
  • A study plan built from the person's exam date

Each inspector can try the free 10-question check first. It shows a score by domain without signing up, so a supervisor can see where study time is needed before paying for seats.

How quotes and invoices work

The crew prices below are per seat. The price depends on team size: one rate for 3 to 9 seats and a lower rate for 10 or more. The table shows the exact figures.

  1. Send the form. Give us your name, work email, company and the number of seats.
  2. Get a quote by email. A person at Rafter Tie replies with a quote.
  3. Pay by invoice. We invoice by hand. There is no checkout for crew orders.

Team orders are handled by email. We do not offer seat assignment, a roster or a team dashboard. Each person works through their own course, and you track progress in your own training plan.

Common questions

Can I see how my inspectors are doing?

Not in one place. Rafter Tie has no team dashboard. Ask each inspector to share their free-check score and study-plan progress, and record it in your training file.

Can an agency pay for one person without a quote?

Yes. A single course is a one-time payment on the course page. If your employer is paying, tick "My employer is paying" at checkout and we email a receipt you can expense. The terms cover refunds for individual purchases.

Does the course qualify someone to inspect?

No. Rafter Tie is exam preparation only. ICC issues the certification, and your jurisdiction decides who may perform inspections.
