2021 or 2024 IRC: which code book to bring

✓ Checked 17 Oct 2026 against ICC's national exam offerings, reference rules and published IRC contents.

✓ ICC's current national certification exam list offers the Residential Building Inspector exam, B1, on 2021 and 2024 code years. Prepare with the IRC edition listed for the exam you select. Choosing the newest book alone does not confirm that it matches your registration.

The useful decision is which exam edition fits your certification plan, then which references match it. Read the Rafter Tie overview and B1 outline guide alongside this checklist.

Choose the exam year before buying the book

ICC's before-exam guidance recommends starting with your employer or jurisdiction's requirements. Establish which credential you need and whether a particular code year is expected. Then use the exam catalog to check the B1 entry, selected year, reference list and outline.

Keep those details together in your study notes. Record the exam title, code year and exact reference title before ordering materials. If you already own an IRC, compare its cover and publication details with the catalog rather than relying on a course advertisement or a colleague's older registration.

The B1 purchase page explicitly asks candidates to verify the code year and says purchases are final. Resolve an edition mismatch before paying. Do the same check if an employer is arranging a voucher or lending you a book.

Section numbers can change between editions

Do not assume that a familiar section number leads to the same topic in both editions. ICC's published contents and the relocation table in its 2024 preview show these examples:

  • ✓ Smoke-alarm provisions: 2021 IRC R314 → 2024 IRC R310.
  • ✓ Carbon-monoxide alarm provisions: 2021 IRC R315 → 2024 IRC R311.
  • ✓ Emergency escape and rescue provisions: 2021 IRC R310 → 2024 IRC R319.

Sources: 2021 IRC contents and 2024 IRC contents and relocation table. These are navigation examples, not a complete list of changes or a statement that the underlying requirements stayed identical. Read the applicable provisions in your own book. This guide supplies section references without reproducing code text.

If you change editions during preparation, rebuild your bookmarks and verify every section citation in your notes. An older study aid may still help identify a topic, but its page references and section numbers need checking. Practice finding the topic by its index terms as well as by a remembered number.

What can you bring?

ICC's test-site reference rules permit copyrighted, bound materials for national certification exams, subject to stated exceptions. The questions and appeals are based on the listed references. Permission to carry another bound book does not make that book the basis of your selected exam.

The same rules allow ink notes or highlighting and require permanently attached tabs. They prohibit loose papers and photocopies of copyrighted material. Check your book's binding, tabs and inserted material before exam day. A tabbing system that works during study still needs to satisfy the published rules.

Can you use a digital reference?

ICC says hardcopy books remain an option when Digital Codes for Exams is offered. To check availability, its digital-reference guidance directs candidates to the catalog's Digital Reference listing. Confirm the selected B1 offering rather than assuming that an ordinary digital subscription, personal PDF or browser tab will be usable during testing.

Choose your reference method early enough to practice with it. For a printed book, learn your tabs and index. For an available exam digital reference, review ICC's preview instructions and practice that interface. Switching methods at the last minute adds a navigation task to an already timed exam.

Make your study materials agree

Before each practice session, check that the book, exercise and section citation identify the same edition. When something disagrees, stop and verify it against your selected reference instead of memorizing the mismatch. Keep local field notes separate from exam-study notes so you can see which source an answer depends on.

Return to the B1 outline guide to organize topics, and use the free B1 diagnostic to identify study priorities. Check each practice item's edition before using its citation for a lookup drill. The cost and scheduling guide covers the next booking steps.
